Cagliari and the South of Sardinia

A tour of South Sardinia including the capital city of Cagliari, coastal roads, the wild and rugged Costa Verde and the islands of Sant Antioco and San Pietro.
Day 1
Arrive at Cagliari airport to collect the hire car and drive to your chosen accommodation. Large flocks of flamingos can often be seen on marshy land between the airport and Pula. Depending on flight times there may be time to relax by the pool before dinner.
Day 2
A chance to visit Sardinia's capital, Cagliari, to see its archaeological museum, cathedral of Santa Maria (Duomo), old hilltop citadel Castello with its narrow streets and medieval towers, Torre di San Pancrazio and Torre dell'Elefante, and also a Roman amphitheatre. Just 20 km north of Cagliari, is San Sperate, famous for its wall murals, over 300, painted by well known and local artists and depicting historical and cultural themes.
Day 3
A visit to Calasetta on the island of Sant' Antioco with its relaxed and very welcoming atmosphere, good local beaches and a short ferry crossing to Carloforte on San Pietro island. On your return a chance to visit St. Antiochus to see remnants of the ancient city of Sulci.
Day 4
A drive along the SE coast through Santa Margherita di Pula with some of Sardinia's most luxurious holiday resort villages surrounded by eucalyptus and pine groves. Carry on to Nora which was founded during the 8th and 9th century BC, and has the remains of Punic and Phoenician sanctuaries, a magnificent Roman villa, amphitheatre and stately forum. Return along the mountain road for superb views of the interior.
Day 5
A day to relax on the magnificent beaches at Porto Pino and explore the sand dunes which stretch for miles. For more intrepid travellers the chance to retrace the train jourmey taken by D H Lawrence in his book 'Sea and Sardinia' between Manda and Arbatax, Isili and Sorgono may prove more tempting.
Day 6
A drive to SW coastline to explore the wild and rugged Costa Verde stopping on the way for a tour of the Montepori mine in Iglesias and a visit to the Museum of Arts and Mines.
Day 7
A chance to visit some of those secluded beaches or villages you discovered during your travels before returning to the hotel for a traditional regional dinner.
Day 8
After breakfast there may be time to visit Cagliari for last minute shopping and lunch before continuing on to the airport.
